Types of Networks

There are many "types" of networks, or ways to classify them. For example, in the second chapter of ISBN 0130487376, networks are classified by geography (local/LAN to Metropolitan Area Network to Wide Area Network), topology (star network, hierarchical network, mesh network, bus network, ring network), ownership (private network or Public Data Network). Add to this Value-added network, wireless network (ad hoc network or structured WiFi, with or without mobility), backbone network, VPN, and hybrids of these. Add to this list hundreds of technology specific networks, such as Synchronous Optical Networking and a large number of telephone networks, and we find too many types to comprehend.

Rather than enumerate all of these, we will look into the specific types as they correspond to networking principles encountered during the course.
